So my son, T, has been taking karate for about a yr and a half. This is the one sports he seems to enjoy. The instructor is a nice guy too. He is part of Ernie Reyes West Coast Karate...a karate machine if you've ever seen one. Everything costs money...the testing, the special events...just everything
Well, our 6 months that we had previously paid for was up yesterday. I knew it was coming soon. I'd also been talking to T about the fact that we probably weren't going to be able to continue due to the cost...crazy cost...$1,200 approximately for 6 months. Maybe for some of you out there that may seem reasonable, but not for me. It's not even that I begrudge the company for their cost...it's just that isn't okay for us in this economical climate. T had set a goal for himself...his little dragon black belt. He met that plus one belt higher so he was excited.
Today, T and I bought sir a gift card to Starbucks and a "thank you for being my teacher" card and handed it to him. I wanted T to understand that you just don't quit...certain things need an appropriate closure to them. I almost cried. It was so hard to make this decision. T seems fine, but I am frustrated that while my hubby and I both work full time (plus I work for the Union) we still couldn't realistically do this. I guess we'll chalk it up to a life lesson...being financially responsible really sucks!!

Oh no. I told Hubby i'd give up the xmas vacay thought if we could just see through the rest of the black belt training...but I'm pretty sure without making some alternate plan with Sir, we'll have to say goodbye too...:(
I really hate how much youth sports cost. Why do kids have to commit so early? We are in one of those counties where kids must be on travel teams by 5th grade in order to play in high school. Plenty of kids we know, who were fantastic soccer players in 4th grade have burnt out by 7th. By then it is too late to switch to another sport.
My oldest has all her eggs in the volleyball basket...it is her only sport. What will she play if she gives up on volleyball? Why does it matter so. I don't have the answer. I just continue on the youth sport express... next stop bankruptcy.
Sounds like this guy is worth the money. We had C in a class downtown, but he never did much and finally wanted to quit. We pushed it for a while and then moved on to try new things. (He's discovered rock climbing! lol) T will hopefully enjoy a chance to try something new. I think it's good to try different things, and who among us can afford $1200/month -- ouch!!
Ooops, I mean $1200/6 months. Still, that's a LOT!
I hear you and totally empathize with you. We are going through the same struggles and Hubby reminds me all the time that it is an important lesson that our children learn the value of $ and that we don’t have an unlimited supply of it. I am sure T understands (not that it makes it easier on you).
Thanks also for entering the giveaway. I will keep my fingers crossed for you!
Hey Friend,
Just wanted to let you know that I tagged you on my blog. Can't wait to read your answers.
